Behind the Lens: Baby Photoshoot

Portrait of Baby Ayaansh

I have been taking professional photos for a long time however, I have never tried a baby photoshoot yet. So when the opportunity came to click photos of this cutie I did not hesitate or bat an eye lid and tried to push myself and my creativity to a new direction.

Challenges:We are in the peak of summer here in Australia and on the day of the shoot we had extreme heat and super bright conditions, so we had to shoot this late in the evening. Then there was the challenge of making sure that the baby was awake and not very tired when we were shooting thankfully the parents made sure that Baby Ayaansh was well awake and in a good mood.

We had the second challenge of making sure I had all the gear I needed for this shoot meaning I had my camera body, all the lenses and extra lighting required to make sure I do not miss any shot and I did not have to run back to get anything as this photoshoot was going to be done at the parents residence. This brings me to the final challenge which is creating the set and the mood for the shot.

The equipment list was exhausting I had my A7III, 24-70 GM, 70-200 GM and 85 GM lenses, plus a portable LED light, extra batteries, a fluffy blanket, Some candles, the baby book, we also had a few coloured glasses and some soft toys.

The other big challenge was light as this was a very bright day and I wanted some soft lighting, we had to think creatively on how we can diffuse the harsh light from the sun, so the solution was a lightly textured cloth which we hung from the pergola to give an effect of a curtain. This worked beautifully as you can see in the photos.

Concept:The concept of the shoot was to show the baby tired at the end of the day surrounded with all he loves relaxing on his armchair and that he fell asleep reading his favourite book. I also wanted some fire in the background, but that was not possible with the time and space constraints we had. This whole photoshoot was done in the backyard.

The Shot: So the question is did we get the shot?

I will let you all make the judgement on this one, while I had a concept image in mind on what I would have liked the final image to be, I was very happy with the images we got and the parents were also stoked on the final set of images. The image above was shot with the 85GM lens at f1.4 at 1/250 and ISO 250.

Shot with the 70-200 GM at 130MM f2.8 1/800 Sec and ISO 400
